Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has condemned the reported spiritual cleansing of a TikToker accused of filming a sacred deity in Oyo State, describing the practice as a violation of human dignity and fundamental rights.
Reacting to the incident, Sowore stated that “any culture that violates human dignity is unacceptable,” insisting that no tradition or cultural practice should undermine the constitutional rights and freedoms of any individual.
The controversy followed reports that the TikToker was subjected to a spiritual cleansing ritual after allegedly recording and sharing footage of a sacred deity, an act considered offensive by some traditional worshippers and community members.
Sowore argued that while cultural traditions and religious beliefs deserve respect, they must be exercised within the framework of the law and in a manner that upholds the dignity and rights of every citizen.
His remarks have sparked widespread debate on social media, with Nigerians expressing differing opinions over the balance between preserving cultural heritage and protecting fundamental human rights.
While some defended the importance of traditional customs, others echoed Sowore’s position that no individual should be subjected to practices perceived as degrading or coercive.
Legal experts have also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees the rights to personal liberty, freedom of expression, and human dignity, while recognizing the country’s rich cultural diversity.
As discussions continue, authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident or indicate whether any investigation will be conducted.
The development has once again brought national attention to the relationship between traditional practices, religious beliefs, and constitutional rights in Nigeria.
