Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has launched a strong criticism of the Kogi State Government led by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, questioning its development record and insisting that the payment of workers’ salaries should not be celebrated as a major achievement.
The senator made the remarks while speaking at a gathering in Okene, Kogi State, where she expressed dissatisfaction with what she described as inadequate development across the state. She also questioned the recognition allegedly given to political thugs, declaring that residents deserved more visible results from those entrusted with public leadership.
“Only thugs are being rewarded. No development. Paying salaries is not an achievement. Look at what Abia State Governor Alex Otti is doing in his state, yet you are boasting about paying salaries in Kogi,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.
She argued that the payment of workers’ salaries is a fundamental responsibility of government and should not be presented as an exceptional accomplishment. According to her, government performance should also be measured through tangible improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, roads and other essential public services.
In making her argument, the senator cited Abia State Governor Alex Otti as an example of leadership she believes Kogi State should learn from. She praised Otti’s administration for what she described as improvements in Aba, road construction and investments in public infrastructure, while noting that salary payments should go hand in hand with development.
Akpoti-Uduaghan further claimed that the achievements recorded by Otti in Abia within less than two years were greater than what Kogi had accomplished over a decade.
Her comments have added to the ongoing political debate over governance, accountability and the standard by which state administrations should be assessed. While regular payment of salaries remains an important responsibility to public workers, the senator maintains that citizens also deserve visible development and improved public services.
As of the reports available, no official response from Governor Ododo or the Kogi State Government to the senator’s latest criticism had been included.
The remarks are expected to generate further reactions among political stakeholders and residents as discussions over governance and development continue in Kogi State.
