IKIRUN, OSUN STATE … The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ifelodun Local Government Chapter, has commenced its environmental sanitation initiative tagged “Let’s Clean Up Ifelodun,” aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and addressing roadside challenges within the local government.
The exercise kicked off at Alamis Junction, Ikirun, along the road leading towards Osogbo, with members of the council engaging in the cutting of overgrown grasses and clearing roadside areas.
According to the council, the initiative is intended to reduce the obstruction of roadside drainage channels caused by overgrown vegetation and accumulated dirt. The group noted that blocked drainage paths contribute to water stagnation and flooding along the road, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
However, during the cleanup exercise, some individuals were reportedly seen dumping refuse at the areas being cleared. The development prompted the council to call for the intervention of the relevant authorities to address the indiscriminate disposal of waste and ensure that the cleaned environment remains tidy.
The NYCN Ifelodun Local Government Chapter stressed that it had carried out its responsibility through the sanitation exercise and called on the government and residents to play their respective roles in maintaining a clean environment.
The council emphasised that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility, noting that while government agencies are expected to provide adequate waste-management support and enforce sanitation regulations, residents must also avoid dumping refuse indiscriminately.
The initiative is expected to encourage community participation, promote environmental awareness and help reduce the risk of flooding through improved roadside maintenance.
The NYCN Ifelodun Chapter urged residents to support the programme and protect the areas already cleaned, stressing that sustainable environmental sanitation requires the cooperation of everyone.
