Ogun 2027: Yayi Faces Fresh Controversy Over Ekiti Roots, Court Cases

OGUN STATE — The political race ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election has taken another turn as controversy over the ancestry and eligibility of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, continues to generate reactions.

Recent reports indicate that Adeola has threatened legal action against APC member Abayomi Hunye and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello over claims made during separate television appearances concerning his alleged Ekiti State ancestry. Adeola, through his media adviser, reportedly gave the two individuals 24 hours to provide evidence supporting the claims or face legal action.

Hunye, however, has maintained his position and welcomed the possibility of a court case, saying he has documentary evidence to support his claim. He also stated that a related legal matter was already before a court and argued that questions surrounding a candidate’s origin and eligibility are matters of public interest.

The controversy has also drawn responses from Adeola’s supporters. Lawyer and former member of the House of Representatives, Kayode Oladele, rejected the allegation concerning Adeola’s ancestry and pointed to Pahayi and Isaga Orile in Ogun State as locations connected to the senator’s paternal family roots.

More recently, Alhaja Aminatu Abiola, identified as Adeola’s stepmother, publicly addressed the controversy and said the senator’s biological parents were from Ogun State, while distinguishing the family’s Ogun ancestry from other family connections to Ekiti.

Separately, the Ogun State chapters of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and BOOT Party have disputed claims that they withdrew or authorised the discontinuance of a court case concerning questions surrounding Adeola’s eligibility and state of origin.

The unfolding developments have placed questions of ancestry, eligibility and pending legal disputes among the issues being discussed ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election. The competing claims remain matters of dispute, with the parties involved presenting different accounts and positions.
