Activist Aisha Yesufu has launched a public fundraising initiative to support the 2027 presidential campaign of Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, calling on Nigerians to contribute financially rather than leave the responsibility of funding the campaign entirely to the former Anambra State governor.
Yesufu made the appeal in a video shared on her official X account on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, urging citizens who wish to participate in the political process to support the campaign with whatever amount they can afford.
According to the activist, the financial responsibility of running a presidential campaign should not rest solely on the candidate. She argued that citizens who want to be part of the political process should also be willing to contribute towards campaign activities.
“My fellow citizens, Peter Obi cannot do this alone. There is no way we can say that we want to rescue a nation, we want to get back our nation, we want the people to own this nation, and then we say that we are going to leave everything to Mr Peter Obi to fund,” she said.
Yesufu recalled the 2023 presidential election, explaining that Obi had initially been reluctant to embrace public fundraising. However, she said she had encouraged the idea because financial contributions would give supporters a sense of participation and ownership in the campaign.
She maintained that the previous fundraising exercise was accounted for despite criticisms that followed, adding that she was prepared to maintain the same commitment to transparency in the new initiative.
The activist also clarified that the fundraising campaign is separate from the official financial arrangements of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. She explained that the citizens’ fundraising account is intended to support activities connected to Obi’s campaign, while the political party would independently announce its own account details for those interested in donating directly to the NDC.
Yesufu further pledged to provide accountability for every contribution received, assuring supporters that the handling of the funds would be transparent.
“In 2023, I was accountable, and I accounted for every dime. And in 2027, by the grace of God, I will also be accountable. And I will account for every dime,” she stated.
The fundraising initiative comes as political mobilization and preparations continue ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. It also places renewed attention on the role of citizen contributions in financing political campaigns and the importance of transparency in managing public donations.
