RELIEF UPDATE: OPay has explained how customers can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 monthly cash support for vulnerable Nigerians, while warning against scammers.

Nigerians seeking to benefit from the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 monthly cash support programme have received further guidance, as fintech company OPay has explained how customers can check their eligibility while warning against fraudulent activities targeting prospective beneficiaries.

In a statement shared on its official X account on Tuesday, OPay disclosed that customers who qualify for the intervention would receive a pop-up notification directly on their OPay app homepage. Eligible customers are expected to click on the notification to proceed with the next steps.

The company clarified that customers who do not see the notification are not eligible through the platform, stressing that OPay does not determine who qualifies for the government intervention or select beneficiaries.

“Eligible customers will see a pop-up notification on their OPay app homepage. Kindly click on the pop-up to proceed with the next steps,” the company stated.

OPay also directed customers who required further assistance to contact the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) support line on 0700-022-2222.

The fintech company issued a strong warning against scammers, emphasising that it would never request customers’ Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to process relief payments.

It advised Nigerians not to pay agents, disclose sensitive banking information or click on suspicious links claiming to offer access to the programme.

According to the information released, customers can check through the official OPay application or use the USSD code 95520#.

The Federal Government recently commenced disbursement under its National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), an initiative designed to provide financial assistance to vulnerable households affected by rising living costs.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, said eligible beneficiaries would receive ₦50,000 monthly, with payments made directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets after they consent to an SMS notification.

The minister also stressed that beneficiaries are not required to submit applications, pay registration fees or engage agents to access the support. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid sharing their PINs, Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) or other confidential financial details with unauthorised individuals.

As the intervention continues, Nigerians have been encouraged to rely only on official communication channels and approved payment platforms to confirm their eligibility and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
