BREAKING: Nigerian-Born Football Executive Lola Ogunbote Joins Chelsea Women in Key Leadership Role
LONDON, ENGLAND … Nigerian-born football executive Lola Ogunbote has officially joined Chelsea FC Women as the club’s new Head of Football Operations and Player Services, marking another significant milestone for Nigerians making their mark in international football administration.
Ogunbote announced her appointment after quietly beginning work at the London-based club earlier in the summer. Her first three months have involved overseeing important operational responsibilities, including Chelsea Women’s pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand, Women’s Super League home fixtures at Stamford Bridge and UEFA Women’s Champions League matchdays at AFC Wimbledon.
Her appointment follows nearly five years at Burnley, where she joined in 2021 as the club’s first Head of Women’s Football. During her tenure, she contributed to recruitment, player development, performance structures and the broader development of Burnley’s women’s football programme.
Ogunbote’s time at Burnley ended on a high note after the women’s team won the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title and secured promotion last season. Her departure brought an important chapter in the club’s women’s football development to a close.
Beyond her club responsibilities, Ogunbote has built a diverse professional background. She previously trained and worked as a lawyer and gained experience in the corporate sector before pursuing a career in football. Her journey has since included work in football operations, coaching and player development.
She has also supported initiatives designed to expand opportunities for girls through football, particularly in Africa. In February 2026, she helped bring a football and leadership development programme to Surulere, Lagos, where 300 female students from 10 schools participated in activities combining football training with leadership development.
Her move to Chelsea highlights the growing contribution of Nigerian-born professionals to the international sports industry, particularly in the administration and development of women’s football.
As she settles into her new position, Ogunbote will bring her experience from Burnley to one of England’s prominent women’s football clubs, with responsibilities central to player services and the day-to-day operations of the team.
Her career serves as an example of how expertise, professional development and commitment can create opportunities beyond the pitch, including in the management and administration of elite football.
