Kiddwaya: Nigeria Would Have Been More Developed If British Rule Lasted 10–15 More Years

Big Brother Naija star Kiddwaya has stirred controversy online after making a provocative claim about Nigeria’s colonial history.

The reality TV personality suggested that Nigeria might have been more developed today if the British had remained in the country for another 10 to 15 years before granting independence.

Kiddwaya’s comment has reignited an age-old debate among Nigerians about the impact of British colonial rule and whether the country would have followed a different development path if independence had come later.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. While some Nigerians credit the colonial era with introducing infrastructure and administrative systems that shaped the country, others argue that colonial policies were primarily designed to serve British interests and left behind structural challenges.

Kiddwaya’s position has consequently attracted mixed reactions, with some agreeing that Nigeria’s post-independence leadership has failed to build effectively on the foundations inherited from the colonial era, while others strongly reject the idea that prolonged colonial rule would have benefited the country.

The comment has once again placed Nigeria’s colonial legacy, independence and post-independence leadership at the centre of public conversation.

What do you think? Would Nigeria really have been more developed if Britain had stayed for another 10–15 years?
