A teenage boy has been arrested in Rivers State for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female student at a football academy located in the state. The disturbing incident has sparked widespread outrage among parents, sports lovers, and human rights groups, who are calling for justice and stronger protection for young athletes in training institutions.
According to reports from local authorities, the suspect, whose name is withheld due to his age, was taken into police custody after the young girl reportedly confided in one of her coaches about the assault. The management of the academy, upon hearing the allegation, immediately alerted the police, who moved swiftly to arrest the suspect.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that an investigation has been launched to uncover the full details surrounding the case. A spokesperson for the Command said the incident is being handled with the utmost seriousness, stressing that the suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is completed. The victim has also been taken for medical examination and is receiving counseling and support from the state’s gender unit.
Community leaders in the area have expressed deep concern over the matter, emphasizing the need for stricter supervision within youth academies and schools. “This is heartbreaking. Our children go to these academies to learn and develop their talents, not to face such trauma,” one parent told reporters. Human rights organizations have also demanded that the Rivers State government strengthen policies that ensure the safety of minors, particularly in privately run academies and boarding facilities.
The incident has reignited conversations around the safety of young people in sports academies across Nigeria. Many have urged football administrators, school proprietors, and state authorities to enforce background checks for staff and implement child protection protocols. Advocates have also called for increased awareness campaigns within schools and sports facilities to encourage young people to speak up when faced with harassment or abuse.
Legal experts have stressed that if found guilty, the suspect could face severe penalties under Nigeria’s Child Rights Act and other relevant state laws that criminalize sexual violence against minors. They also called for swift prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt such acts.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Ministry of Youth and Sports has reportedly reached out to the victim’s family, assuring them that justice will be served and that the case will be closely monitored. The ministry also promised to review safety standards in all football and training academies under its jurisdiction.
The heartbreaking case has once again drawn attention to the growing need for safeguarding systems in Nigerian sports institutions, particularly those hosting teenagers and young children. Advocacy groups insist that beyond punishment, prevention is key — through education, surveillance, and the establishment of safe reporting channels for young athletes.
The police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course while reaffirming their commitment to protecting minors and ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence.
