Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has decided to boycott their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya on October 14, 2024.

The decision followed poor treatment upon their arrival in Libya. Their flight, originally intended for Benghazi, was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, about three hours away. The team was stranded at the airport for over 12 hours without food, water, or internet access, prompting serious concerns about safety and well-being.

Captain William Troost-Ekong and other players expressed frustration, citing security issues and poor conditions.

They refused to travel further by road to the match location, worried about the treatment they might receive if they proceeded.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) supported the team’s decision, focusing on their safe return to Nigeria instead of competing in the fixture.

This boycott could have serious implications for Nigeria’s AFCON qualification, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) may penalize the team for not participating.

Points could be docked, and their qualification hopes might be jeopardized depending on the outcomes of other group matches.
